Cave-ins are the number one killer in excavation work, and Canberra’s clay soils make this risk even higher. I’ve seen trenches that looked perfectly stable in the morning collapse after afternoon rain because our clay loses all its strength when saturated.

What makes it worse here is that many property owners in areas like Gungahlin and Molonglo Valley don’t realize how quickly our soil conditions can change. One day you’re digging in hard-packed clay, the next day after rain it’s like wet concrete that wants to slide.

In our ACT regulations, any excavation over 1.5 meters deep generally requires shoring or sloping, but honestly, I recommend considering it much earlier given our soil conditions.

I’ve seen Canberra clay that looked solid at 1 meter deep collapse without warning. For most residential projects in suburbs like Forrest or Deakin, if we’re going deeper than 1 meter, I’m already thinking about protective systems. Our weather changes so fast here that what’s safe in the morning might not be safe after an afternoon thunderstorm.

I’ve had excavations in Belconnen that were perfectly safe on Friday afternoon become dangerous by Monday morning after weekend weather.

For most of Canberra’s clay soils in good conditions, we use 3:4:1 slopes (that’s 3 feet horizontal for every 4 feet vertical). But here’s the thing – when our clay gets saturated, which happens regularly, we often need to go to 1.5:1 slopes or even flatter.

I’ve learned not to take chances with Canberra weather. If there’s any chance of rain, I slope more conservatively. Better to move more soil than risk a collapse, especially on residential projects where kids might be around.

For most residential projects here in Canberra, I allow at least 1 meter of working space around excavations, but our clay soils and weather conditions often require more.

If you’re doing foundation work in established suburbs like Forrest or Deakin, you need space for workers to move safely, especially when conditions get slippery. I’ve seen too many accidents when people try to work in cramped conditions around excavations.

For commercial projects or when working near property boundaries, the calculations get more complex, but safety always comes first. I’d rather explain why we need more space than explain why someone got hurt.
